The drone operations team work closely with internal colleagues across West Midlands Combined Authority and local authorities to assess and manage drone deployment requests.
This includes:
• Reviewing submitted drone requests
• Conducting site visits to evaluate potential take-off and landing zones
• Performing risk assessments, and securing landowner permissions for flight operations.
• Operating drones to collect a variety of data types e.g. aerial video footage, vehicle counts, live traffic monitoring, 2D orthomosaic maps, and 3D models and processing this data for analysis and reporting.
• Ensuring all drone activities adhere to the latest Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) regulations and maintaining up-to-date knowledge of evolving airspace and safety requirements.
It was fascinating to learn how drone technology is being used to enhance transport planning and operations across the region.
