On Sunday (4 January), BBC Radio 4 aired 'Highways to Hell', a documentary examining the importance of road and street works and the impacts of the resulting disruption.
The programme reported on the current landscape surrounding road and street works across the UK, interviewing motorists, business owners, policymakers, and industry representatives. The programme also gathered insights from Conservative Councillor Nick Adams King from Hampshire County Council, Chair of the Transport Select Committee Ruth Cadbury MP and Nicola Bell from National Highways, in addition to Street Works UK's CEO, Clive Bairsto.
The programme highlighted how improved coordination between local councils, utility companies, and the public can reduce the disruptions that street works may cause. To underscore the need for these improvements, the programme also highlighted how speed and communication are the current concerns being discussed among motorists and businesses regarding street works.
One of the key solutions raised to the apparent siloed communications was for utility companies to inform motorists clearly ahead of carrying out works on roads, setting out what is being worked on, and when they are expected to be completed.
