The Department for Transport (DfT) confirms Simon Lightwood MP as minister responsible for roads

The Department for Transport has officially confirmed the portfolios of its ministerial team

With Simon Lightwood MP taking on the pivotal role of Minister for Roads. This appointment positions Lightwood as the key government figure for stakeholders across the highways and street works sector to engage with.

Representing Wakefield and Rothwell since June 2022, Lightwood brings a wealth of experience to the role. He previously served as Local Transport Minister from July 2024 to September 2025, following a two-year tenure as Shadow Minister for Local Transport. His consistent focus on transport policy has earned him recognition as a committed advocate for sustainable and efficient infrastructure.

Prior to entering Parliament, Lightwood played an active role in shaping Labour’s transport agenda as a member of the National Policy Forum, representing Yorkshire. The sector will be watching closely as Lightwood steps into this influential position, with expectations high for meaningful dialogue and progress on key issues affecting roads, street works, and mobility across the UK.
