Road to Net Zero project call for Case Studies

As part of the RTNZ project we are looking to identify a few suitable case studies that we can use to help with the developments of the new Optioneering Tool.

Calling all Utility Companies and Contractors! Help Shape the Future of Low-Carbon Street Works

The HAUC(UK) Road to Net Zero project team is developing an innovative online Optioneering Tool - designed to compare the carbon emissions and other key impacts of different methods used to deliver street works and road works.

To make sure this tool provides robust, reliable outputs, we are seeking real-world case studies from across the utility sector, including Gas, Water, Electricity and Communications, to test and validate its functionality.

What’s the Optioneering Tool for?
This practical, decision-support tool will help users assess the environmental and social impacts of using different tools, techniques, and materials, empowering organisations to make better-informed operational decisions that reduce carbon emissions without introducing unintended consequences.

What we need
We’re looking for planned street works taking place between August and September 2025 that could potentially be delivered using either traditional open-cut trenching or trenchless/minimum-dig techniques (e.g. pipe renewals or rehabilitation via insertion/slip lining).

You don’t need to use both methods—we’ll simply capture real data from the approach you adopt.

📊 The case studies will measure a range of factors including:

  • Carbon emissions
  • Air quality
  • Noise and vibration
  • Traffic management
  • Broader social impacts

Why get involved?
By contributing a case study, you’ll be supporting the development of a free-to-use tool for the entire HAUC community—enabling smarter, greener decisions across the industry. Your involvement will help ensure the tool reflects real-world conditions and delivers real-world value.
