Navigating Neurodiversity - Making Motorway Travel More Accessible for Everyone

accessibility isn’t just a feature it’s a priority

At National Highways, accessibility isn’t just a feature it’s a priority. They are committed to ensuring that every motorist, regardless of their abilities, can travel safely and confidently across England’s motorways and major A-roads. Here’s how they're making that happen.

🌻 Hidden Disabilities Sunflower for Vehicles

Not all disabilities are visible. That’s why National Highways support the use of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower, a discreet symbol that can be displayed on your vehicle. If you or someone in your car has a non-visible impairment and may need extra support during a breakdown or emergency, the Sunflower helps roadside and emergency services recognize that need.

The Sunflower for vehicles is completely free and can be ordered directly from the Hidden Disabilities Store.

🛣️ Access Guides for Motorway Services

Planning a journey? they have partnered with AccessAble, a leading provider of accessibility information, to create detailed access guides for every motorway service area in England.

These guides cover: Parking and toilet facilities, Physical layout and lighting, Staff training and assistance availability.

You can access these guides via the AccessAble website or by downloading the free AccessAble app.

🧏 Contacting Us if You’re Deaf

If you’re a British Sign Language (BSL) user, you can reach SignLive, a free online interpreting service. SignLive connects you with a qualified BSL interpreter who will relay your conversation with National Highways customer service team.

To learn more, watch our video: Contacting National Highways if you're deaf. You can access the service via the SignLive website or the SignLive app.

📱 Emergency Texting Service

If you’re unable to use a roadside emergency phone due to a speech or hearing impairment, help is just a text away. Simply text 0738 028 3600 for roadside assistance. This number is also displayed on emergency telephones across our network.

Everyone deserves a safe and accessible journey. Whether you're planning a long trip or just passing through, these services are here to support you every mile of the way.
