National Highways are pleased to announce the launch of our autumn T.R.I.P. campaign on Monday 29 September, focusing on the “I” for Inspect. This season, we’re encouraging drivers to check their tyres before long journeys, in support of Tyre Safety Month this October.
As weather conditions worsen, tyre safety becomes even more critical. Worn, underinflated, or damaged tyres are a leading cause of collisions and breakdowns – accounting for over 53,000 incidents on major roads in 2024, nearly one in five. Yet, too many drivers neglect basic checks: 55% don’t check tread depth, and almost half (48%) admit they don’t always check tyre pressure. The consequences are severe: more than 190 people were killed or seriously injured in tyre-related collisions in 2023.
Beyond safety, tyre issues also cause delays and road closures – resulting in lost time and added stress for everyone.
We’re also raising awareness of tyre ratings and providing guidance on labelling to help drivers choose the right replacements. Additionally, we’re developing accessible resources to support disabled drivers with essential vehicle checks.
