Ending Roadworker Abuse: Bringing the Sector Together

Worker abuse on our roads has become an all too familiar reality

One that the sector can no longer afford to ignore. Every day, roadworkers face verbal aggression, physical threats, and dangerous behaviour from members of the public, simply for carrying out essential work that keeps the country moving. These are the people who repair our highways, maintain critical infrastructure, and ensure that millions can travel safely. They deserve to do their jobs without fear.

In a powerful new article and film released by Highways Magazine, the issue of roadworker abuse is brought into sharp focus. As the publication prepares for its biggest year yet in 2026, it is taking a strong stance on a topic that affects every organisation in the sector.

Last week, Editor Dom Browne chaired a major roundtable with Balfour Beatty plc and leading voices from across the industry. The discussion highlighted the urgency of the problem but also showcased the shared commitment to creating meaningful, lasting change. From improved reporting and support systems to public education and behavioural campaigns, the message was clear: tackling roadworker abuse must be a collective effort.

Raising awareness is the first step. Encouraging the public to recognise roadworkers as skilled professionals — not obstacles to their journey — is equally important. As an industry, we must continue to champion respect, safety, and responsibility on our roads.
